Setup

What type of phone or tablet do I need to use the app?

FarmWorks Mobile Android requires a smart phone or tablet running Google's Android operating system. The device must have Bluetooth and will need internet access via WiFi.


How do I get FarmWorks Mobile Android?

To download FarmWorks Mobile Android:

  1. Select the Play Store app icon on your phone or tablet (formally 'Google Market').
  2. New users to the Play Store may be required to set up a Google account to use the Play Store, but the device will take you through that process.
  3. In the search box at the top, search for 'Shearwell FarmWorks Mobile'.
  4. Tap 'FarmWorks Mobile' in the search result then press 'Install'.

You must have a registered copy of FarmWorks by Shearwell Data Ltd., version 1.8.58 or higher, in order to run FarmWorks Mobile.

How do I start using FarmWorks Mobile?


Before you can start you must enter your FarmWorks Mobile licence key in FarmWorks on the PC.

  1. On your PC, go to Help  > Register FarmWorks by Shearwell Data Ltd.
  2. Select licence type FarmWorks Mobile.
  3. Type in the licence key number.
  4. Click Register.


After registering, you must do an initial data transfer to move your FarmWorks data from your PC into the FarmWorks Mobile app.

  1. Switch your phone or tablet to WiFi. It must be on the same WiFi network as your computer.
  2. On your device, open FarmWorks Mobile. Press Next.



  3. Your device will try to connect with your PC to start the data transfer.



  4. On your PC, go to Data Transfer > FarmWorks Mobile > Send Data to FarmWorks Mobile.



  5. Click on Send Data to Mobile Device.



  6. Be patient - the initial data transfer is moving all your FarmWorks records onto your device. When the export is complete click Exit.



  7. When your data is synchronised the FarmWorks Mobile home screen will open. You are ready to start using FarmWorks Mobile!


How do I synchronise my data?

After the initial data transfer to FarmWorks Mobile from FarmWorks on the PC you can start collecting data on the app. When you are ready to send data from your phone or tablet to the PC you need to synchronise your data.

  1. Switch your phone or tablet to WiFi. It must be on the same WiFi network as your computer.
  2. On the FarmWorks Mobile home screen press Sync.



  3. On your PC, go to Data Transfer > FarmWorks Mobile > Get Data from FarmWorks Mobile.



  4. Click on Get Data from Mobile Device.



  5. Click Exit when the data transfer is successful.
  6. You must synchronise your data from the computer back to FarmWorks Mobile before you can use the app again.



To synchronise your data from FarmWorks on the PC to your phone or tablet
  1. Switch your phone or tablet to WiFi. It must be on the same WiFi network as your computer.
  2. On the FarmWorks Mobile home screen press Sync.



  3. On your PC, go to Data Transfer > FarmWorks Mobile > Send Data to FarmWorks Mobile.



  4. Click on Send Data to Mobile Device.



  5. Click Exit when the data transfer is successful.

How do I connect to the Shearwell Stick Reader (SDL400S)?

FarmWorks Mobile can accept EID's via Bluetooth from a Shearwell stick reader (SDL400S). Before you can use the app with a particular stick reader you must "pair" them - an easy procedure you will only have to do once.

  1. Run the FarmWorks Mobile app and navigate to a screen that allows individual animals to be read (e.g. select Sheep > Statutory > Movement > Purchase > Add Animals).



  2. Switch on the stick reader. On FarmWorks Mobile press Connect.



  3. If a message appears asking permission to switch on Bluetooth, press 'Yes'.
  4. Press Scan for devices to scan for all Bluetooth devices in range.


  5. On the back of your stick reader look for a label with the Bluetooth name. It will start with SDL400S, followed by another 4 digits. For example: SDL400S 1234. Make a note of the four digits on your stick reader.

  6. Sticker on the back of the stick reader shows its Bluetooth number
  7. Once the scan is complete, find the stick reader's Bluetooth name in the list and press on it.



  8. If you haven't connected to this particular stick reader before, you will be prompted to enter the pairing PIN.



  9. Enter the PIN '1111' and tap OK.
  10. Look for the tick and the stick reader icon in the top left of the screen. It will say Connected and the stick reader will display a blue light when there is an active connection. In future the phone or tablet will try to automatically connect to the reader whenever you enter an Add Animals screen.

App Settings

The app settings screen allows you to configure how the app works. To get to the setting screen, press the 'Settings' button on the FarmWorks Mobile main screen, you then have the following options:

  • Clear last used device - will stop the app trying to automatically connect to the previously used EID reader.
  • Legacy Bluetooth Mode - If you are having problems connecting to the red handled stick reader tick this box. When ticked the app will not be able to connect to the blue handled stick reader (the model compatible with Apple iPhone).

Recording

Selecting and Adding Animals

When you select a function (birth, movement, treatment, etc.) you can add the animals in three different ways - scan the tags with the stick reader straight into the app; import a group of tags that were previously scanned and stored in the memory of the stick reader; or manually type in a tag number that is already in your FarmWorks data.

Record data for individual animals that are already in your FarmWorks data

Read the EID tags live

  1. Switch on the stick reader.
  2. Press Add Animals to record an action.
  3. Press on Connect.


  4. Press on the number of your stick reader.


  5. Wait a few seconds for the phone or tablet to connect to the stick reader.  The button will show it is connected and the blue light on the stick reader will come on.  If you haven't connected to the stick reader previously click here for details on how to connect.



  6. Now read an EID using the stick reader and it will be added to the animal list.

Import EID's from stick reader memory

To add a group from stick reader memory:

  1. Switch on the stick reader.
  2. Press Add Animals to record an action.
  3. Press on Connect.
  4. Press on the number of your stick reader.

  5. Wait a few seconds for the phone or tablet to connect to the stick reader.  The button will show it is connected and the blue light on the stick reader will come on.  If you haven't connected to the stick reader previously click here for details on how to connect.
  6. Press Groups.



  7.  The app will display a list of groups stored in the stick reader's memory. Tick the group(s) you want to import. Press Ok.

Manually enter tags

  1. In the app press Manual Tag.
  2. Enter the last few significant digits of the tag number; suggestions will appear showing known animals on holding. E.g. for animal UK123456 300101 just enter 101 and the app will display suggestions of all animals on holding with tags ending with 101.

  3. Select the tag from the suggestions list.
  4. View the list when all the animals are added. Press a tag number on the list to remove an animal, view animal details, or add comments to the animal.
  5. Press Continue to proceed with the action.

  6. Press Save to finish.

Entering data for new animals not in your FarmWorks data

When you try to record data for an animal that is not known in FarmWorks, you will be prompted to create a new animal record.

If a new sheep tag number is scanned by the stick reader:

  1. Press the Date of Birth field. Use the calendar to set the age of the animal.
  2. Use the dropdown arrows to select the breed and the sex of the animal.
  3. if there are multiple animals with similar details you have the option to apply the birth date, breed and sex to all.
  4. Press Save to finish.


If a new cattle tag number is scanned by the stick reader:
  1. Press the Date of Birth field. Use the calendar to set the age of the animal.
  2. Use the dropdown arrows to select the breed and the sex of the animal.
  3. Press Save to finish.


To manually enter a new tag:

  1. In the app press Manual Tag.


      
  2. Select the herd/flock number. Select from a list of recently used herd/ flock numbers. If the herd/flock number is not on the list press New Herd / Flock and enter the number (e.g. 123456).

     
      
  3. Enter the tag number. As you type the app will automatically add zero padding and calculate the check digit for cattle. E.g. for tag UK123456 300101 just enter 101 and the app will automatically add any zero padding and the check digit.



  4. Press Ok to add the tag to the list. Then add details (date of birth, sex and breed) to complete the animal record.

Cattle Recording

Record a cattle birth

  1. On the home screen, touch the cattle icon. Press Statutory, select Birth.
  2. Touch the date to change the birth date if necessary.



  3. Select the dam by pressing Enter (to type in the tag number or choose from a list) or Scan (to connect to your stick reader and read an EID tag).
  4. Select or add the sire if known.
  5. Press Enter to start typing the calf's tag, or Scan to read the calf's EID tag.



  6. Select the breed and gender from the drop down list.
  7. Press Save to exit the screen, or Save and Add if you have multiple births to record for this cow. This information can be submitted to BCMS from FarmWorks on the PC after you synchronise your data.


Record a cattle movement

  1. On the home screen, touch the cattle icon. Press Statutory, select Movement.
  2. Select Purchase to record new cattle bought in; Private Sale to record cattle being sold to another farm; or Other Movement to record cattle moving to abattoir, market or to another holding.
  3. Touch the date to change the movement date if necessary.



  4. Select the source and destination holdings.
  5. To add a new holding press Add Other Holding at the bottom of the screen.



  6. Enter the Holding number, name, type of holding, and address. Press Save.



  7. Press Add Animals to record the tag numbers of the animals moved. Select either Connect (to read an EID tag), Manual Tag (to type in a tag number or pick one off a list) or Add Groups (to bring in tag numbers from the stick reader).
  8. For purchased cattle whose tag numbers are not known to FarmWorks, you must create a new animal record for each tag - select a birth date, breed and sex for each tag number.



  9. Press Save for each new tag.
  10. Press Continue when all animals have been added.
  11. Press Save to record the sale or purchase.  This information can be submitted to BCMS from FarmWorks on the PC after you synchronise your data.



Record a cattle death on farm

  1. On the home screen, touch the cattle icon. Press Statutory, select Death.
  2. Touch the date to change the death date if necessary.



  3. Select a disposal site.
  4. Select a death reason. Add a new death reason if necessary.



  5. Press Add Animals to record the tag numbers of the dead animals. Select either Connect (to read an EID tag), Manual Tag (to type in a tag number or pick one off a list) or Add Groups (to bring in tag numbers from the stick reader).
  6. Press Continue when all animals have been added.
  7. Press Save to record the death.  This information can be submitted to BCMS from FarmWorks on the PC after you synchronise your data.



Record a cattle tag replacement

  1. On the home screen, touch the cattle icon. Press Statutory, select Replacement.
  2. Touch the date to change the replacement date if necessary.


  3. Select a replacement reason.



  4. Press Add to enter the replacement tags.
  5. Press Previous Tag to manually enter a tag number, or press Scan to read an EID tag.
  6. Press Replacement Tag to manually enter a tag number, or press Scan to read an EID tag.

      

  7. Press Add to list.



  8. Once the list is complete press Continue.


  9. Press Save to record the replacements.  This information can be submitted to BCMS from FarmWorks on the PC after you synchronise your data.



Record a cattle treatment or procedure

  1. On the home screen, touch the cattle icon. Press Medicines.
  2. Select either Administer Treatment or Administer Procedure.



  3. Touch the date to change the treatment or procedure date if necessary.


  4. Press Choose Medicine for treatments. Only those medicines in your lock-up will be displayed. Select a medicine from your inventory.



  5. Enter the dose per animal and the person who administered it.
  6. Select a reason for the procedure or treatment, or add a new one.



  7. Press Add Animals to record the tag numbers of the treated animals. Select either Connect (to read an EID tag), Manual Tag (to type in a tag number or pick one off a list) or Add Groups (to bring in tag numbers from the stick reader).
  8. Press Save to record the treatments.



Record a cattle comment

  1. On the home screen, touch the cattle icon. Press Comments.



  2. Select a comment from the list or add a new one.



  3. Press Add Animals to record the tag numbers of the treated animals. Select either Connect (to read an EID tag), Manual Tag (to type in a tag number or pick one off a list) or Add Groups (to bring in tag numbers from the stick reader).
  4. Select a colour indicator flag to show importance.
  5. Tick the box Show comment when next scanned if you want a warning icon to be displayed next time you read or enter the tag.
  6. Press Save to record the comments.


You can view comments within the animal details screen, or when adding animals to an event (e.g. treatment) you will see any comment colour flags within the tag list and pressing on the tag will display all comments.


Cattle Management Groups

  1. On the home screen, touch the cattle icon. Press Management Groups.
  2. Select an existing group from the list or press New Group.
  3. To create a new group type in a group name.
  4. Press Add Animals to record the tag numbers of animals in the group. Select either Connect (to read an EID tag), Manual Tag (to type in a tag number or pick one off a list) or Add Groups (to bring in tag numbers from the stick reader).
  5. Press Save to save your changes.

You cannot currently use groups within the app to record an event. However you can record or report using the group on FarmWorks.


Sheep Recording

Recording a sheep birth

  1. On the home screen, touch the sheep icon. Press Statutory, select Birth.
  2. Touch the date to change the birth date if necessary.
  3. Select the dam by pressing Enter (to type in the tag number or choose from a list) or Scan (to connect to your stick reader and read an EID tag).
  4. Select or add the sire if known.
  5. Press Enter to start typing the lamb's tag, or Scan to read the lamb's EID tag.
  6. Select the breed and gender from the drop down list.
  7. Press Save to exit the screen, or Save and Add if you have multiple births to record for this ewe.

Recording a sheep movement

  1. On the home screen, touch the sheep icon. Press Statutory, select Movement.

Reporting

View animal details

  1. On the home screen, select Reports. Press View Animal.
  2. Select an animal from the list or press Find Tag to search for a specific tag number.
  3. Press Connect to scan an EID ear tag.
  4. The Animal screen will display any offspring that are currently on the farm. Touch a tag number to view that animal's details.
  5. The Movement screeen will display the animal's movement history, or the birth date if it was born on your farm.
  6. Comments against an animal will be flagged. Open the Comment screen to see the complete comment history for an animal.

Export / share tag numbers

To export / share a list of tag numbers to an email, text message etc:

From scan animals screen
  1. On any of the scan animals screen when you manually add or read the EID's onto the event being recorded (e.g. Sheep / Cattle > Statutory > Movement > Add Animals).
  2. In the green menu bar at the top, press the 'Share' button.

  2. Long press on the management group to export.
  3. Press Share Tag Numbers.
